Trudy Lynn Bring the Beef Home to Me
Lee Audrey Nelms
b. August 9th, 1947 in Houston (Texas)
SILK 'N SOUL
Demon
1983
Peu aprs, Trudy grave "Bring the beef home to me" pour la marque Jam Stone.

Trudy sings professionally since the mid-60s, first with The Rhythmaires, then alongside Archie Bell and finally with Leo Baxter's orchestra. She spent 5 years with Clarence Green quickly accumulating a lot of experience. Her first single was issued by Sinnett and then she was taken in hand by producer Huey Meaux and his label Crazy Cajun. Shortly after, Trudy records "Bring the beef home to me" for the Jam Stone imprint. The title has some success but producer Jerry King disappears with profits. Most of these singles have never been included in any LP or CD. In this compilation, we find only his two titles for Crazy Cajun. We recognize her powerful but also subtle voice in a Soul-Blues style (the beautiful "Love is a strange thing").
TRUDY SINGS THE BLUES
Ichiban
1989
Elle chante avec inspiration sur "Sittin' and drinkin'", "I can tell", "Bring the beef home to me".
Spotted by Gary "B.B." Coleman, Trudy begins a fruitful collaboration with John Abbey's Ichiban label. Recorded under the supervision of Coleman - producer and multi-instrumentalist - this debut album effectively demonstrates the Soul-Blues skills of Trudy Lynn as a singer. She sings with inspiration on "Sittin' and drinkin'", "I can tell", "Bring the beef home to me". But the main piece of this disc is the title track, a long slow blues in which Trudy seems perfectly at ease. She also tries several covers not necessarily very original (except for "Do I need you" after Ann Peebles rather achieved). Despite a very clean and too slick production, this first album is a great success and allows Trudy to start a nice second career.
COME TO MAMA
Ichiban
1990
When something is wrong with my baby", "Come to mama", "One woman men", "Do I need you (too)".
Produced by Frank "Buzz" Amato, this second album for Ichiban is more focused on Soul and less on Blues than the first one. Once again, very few personal compositions but some good Soul covers : "When something is wrong with my baby", "Come to mama", "One woman men", "Do I need you (too)". Trudy sings remarkably, with all the necessary inspiration, this repertoire which sometimes lacks originality.

I'LL RUN YOUR HEART AWAY
Ichiban
1993
This time, the record is co-produced by Frank "Buzz" Amato, Sam Whiteside and Trudy herself. As a co-producer, Trudy is totally involved in producing the album. There is an excellent blend of contemporary Blues and brassy Southern Soul still well performed with catchy compositions such as "Loose lips", "Whole lotta leave me alones", "Instant breakfast", "Love Jones", "Workin' man" . At the end of the program, a nice tribute to Otis Redding.
24 HOUR WOMAN
Ichiban
1994
On trouve plusieurs moments intenses : "8 days on the road", "24 hour woman", "Real lovin'", "2 girls for the price of 1", "Pay the price", "I didn't know how happy I could be".
For this fifth and last album for Ichiban, production is ensured by Frank "Buzz" Amato, Trudy Lynn and Edd Miller. There are several intense moments : "8 days on the road", "24 hours woman", "Real lovin'", "2 girls for the price of 1", "Pay the price", "I didn't know how happy I could be".
FIRST LADY OF THE SOUL
Ichiban
1990's
This is a compilation of her sides for Ichiban. But, the label has added five live tracks that certainly deserve listening : an excellent version of the famous "Wang dang doodle", "Loose lips", "Rock me baby", "Just a little bit" and especially a remarkable reading of "The woman in me". These very stimulating tracks show well his ease on stage and it seems to me a pity that no complete live album was issued at this time.
U DON'T KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS
Ruf
June 1997
A part "U don't know what time it is", la reprise de "Help through the day" de Leon Russell, "Time gone by", le reste des titres reste trs calibr et sans surprise.
Produced by Charles Mitchell with a very contemporary Soul sound, this CD features Bernard Allison and especially Lucky Peterson's keyboards. Apart from "U don't know what time it is", the cover of Leon Russell's "Help through the day", "Time gone by", the rest of the titles remains very calibrated and unsurprising.
TRUDY'S BLUES

Ces bandes live s'avrent bien infrieures aux pistes live de "First lady of the soul".
Concert captured in France at the Lionel Hampton jazz club in Paris where Trudy is accompanied by Carl Weathersby on guitar. We regret too long and boring titles. These live tapes are well below of "First lady of the soul" live tracks.

I'M STILL HERE
Sawdust Alley
2006
On peut ressortir "Blues singing woman", "I'm still here", "Left me singing the blues" et "Welcome home baby".
Trudy records this album under the supervision of trumpeter Calvin Owens (former B.B. King's bandleader). Owens gathers around the singer a beautiful group of musicians and excellent blowers. The compositions are also up to par, written for the most part by Rue Davis or by Calvin Owens and Trudy herself. She seems in fine form during these sessions singing with power and feeling. We can highlight "Blues singing woman", "I'm still here", "Left me singing the blues" and "Welcome home baby". There are also two songs sung by Nelson Mills.

Un programme Soul-Blues inspir et vari qui mrite une coute attentive : "Play the honky tonks", "Every side of lonesome", "Country man blues", "Red light", "Down in Memphis".

Trudy is associated with a good homogeneous backing band including Steve Krase on harmonica. An inspired and varied Soul-Blues program that deserves careful listening : "Play the honky tonks", "Every side of lonesome", "Country man blues", "Red light", "Down in Memphis".
EVERYTHING COMES WITH A PRICE
Connor Ray Music
2015
Quelques titres sympathiques comme "Fat daddy", "Everything comes with a price", "Let my daddy do that" et le gospel "Living humble".
Some nice tracks like "Fat daddy", "Everything comes with a price", "Let my daddy do that" and the gospel "Living humble". Trudy sings properly but the production (still ensured by Rock Romano) seems too slick. A program that is sorely lacking flame. We also note the participation of guitarist Paul "Lil 'Buck" Sinegal.
I'LL SING THE BLUES FOR YOU
Connor Ray Music
2016
World of trouble", "Still my angel child", "If it's new to you".
Always associated with harmonicist Steve Krase, Trudy releases here her third album for the Houston-based label. Here, the sound is more focused on Blues with some Soul and Funk elements. Many covers but well chosen and played with taste and some original compositions : "Alright baby", "Thru chasin' you", "World of trouble", "Still my angel child", "If it's new to you". A very consistent album, maybe her best.
BLUES KEEP KNOCKIN'

2018
I'll sing the blues for you". I sing the blues", "When I been drinkin'".
Always with Steve Krase's band and producer Rock Romano, Trudy delivers here a record in the direct continuation of "Royal oaks blues cafe" and "I'll sing the blues for you".
